CMS Research Seminar: Home-based Palliative Care: Improved Patient Care at Lower Cost, Presenter: Susan M. Enguidanos, PHD, MPH, Director Research, Partners in Care Foundation; Hanson Family Assistant Professor of Gerontology, University of Southern California, Davis School of Gerontology Tuesday, June 10, 2008 11:00am-1:pm. This session presented a randomized control trial that tested a home-based model of end of life care for seriously ill patients with heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and cancer, with a life expectancy of about one year. Results revealed that patients receiving this care were more than likely to die at home, reported higher satisfaction with medical care, and were less likely to use the emergency room and hospital, resulting in significantly lower costs of medical care in the last year of life.
