In 2006, Partners in Care (Partners) was commissioned by the Motion Picture & Television Fund (MPTF) to determine if naturally occurring retirement communities (NORCs) of industry professionals exist within the cities and neighborhoods surrounding local Los Angeles motion picture studios and, should NORCs exist, develop and administer a needs assessment survey using community-based participatory research (CBPR) protocols to determine existing supportive services and any gaps in service provision that must be remedied to maintain industry retirees’ (retirees) independence in the community. The study objectives were to: 1) To obtain a better understanding of where MPTF retirees live and their proximity to motion picture studios located in the Los Angeles area; 2) To determine whether NORCs exist proximal to motion picture studios in the Los Angeles area; 3) To develop a quality assurance listing of health and social service providers in the Los Angeles area 4) To gain greater knowledge of the strengths and weakness of social service provision in and around NORCs, particularly those located in the most densely populated areas, as compared to those located in the less densely populated areas; 5) To set the stage for planning and developing additional community infrastructure that will: a) enhance service provision for motion picture industry retirees living in the NORC areas, b) support MPTF Elder Connection existing social service and volunteer programs; and c) foster the development of innovative programs and services by recommending programs and interventions on community care, collaborative design, and organizational planning levels.
